Our head reed maker, William Anderson, is a graduate of Boston University and the New England Conservatory of Music, where, as a scholarship student, he received a Masters degree in Music. While there, Bill made reeds for Dunkel Reeds and performed reed making functions for his teacher Larry Thorstenberg (solo English horn, Boston Symphony Orchestra ret.). He has also received instruction from Joe Robinson, John Mack, Basil Reeve, John Ferillo, Treva Womble, Don Baker and Heinz Holliger.
Bill began freelancing in the New England area during graduate school, performing as Principal oboe with orchestras in New Haven, Portland, Maine, Nashua, N.H., the Boston Civic Symphony, Cape Ann Symphony, Central Mass, and the New Hampshire Symphony. He has performed the Bozza Divertissement for English horn and orchestra on a tour of the Carribean as well as Telemann Concerto for oboe in C minor and strings at the Greensboro Festival in Vermont.
Bill has traveled extensively, performing La Scala di Seta and the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto English Horn solo with the orchestra in California at USIU, Principal oboe on Stravinky's Rite of Spring with Guadalajara Symphony in Mexico, as well as performances with the Colorado Springs Symphony, Colorado, The Florida Orchestra in Tampa, Florida, and the New World Symphony in Miami.
His time in The New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, included performances with John Eliot Gardner, John Adams, Christoph Eschenbach, Sergiu Commissiona, and Michael Tilson Thomas among others. William participated in the U.S. tour of the world premiere of The Diary of Anne Frank in New York, Chicago and Houston, which was narrated by Audrey Hepburn.
In addition to Principal Oboe with the Central City Opera in Colorado and 2nd Oboe/English Horn with the Florida West Coast Symphony, Bill was a Technical Sergeant with the USAF Academy Band for four years and was Principal oboe with the Rampart Winds woodwind quintet. As a member of the USAF, he appeared as a presenter at the 1997 IDRS conference, performing two of his own compositions.This prestigious group, which tours nationally and internationally in support of the Air Force Academy mission, is a "premiere" band, one of only two in the Air Force, the other being in Washington, D.C..
Mr. Anderson is currently a freelancer performing with the Ann Arbor, Flint and Saginaw Symphonies in Michigan, Toledo Symphony in Ohio and occasionally with the Orlando Philharmonic, the Florida Orchestra and stage show orchestras in Florida.
All of this experience is brought to bear in each reed Mr. Anderson makes.
